What Is a 4-in-1 Bucket? Maximize Efficiency with One Attachment

What Is a 4-in-1 Bucket?
The 4 in 1 bucket is a construction attachment with four core functions – loading, bulldozing, leveling, and grasping. It can be installed on loaders, skid steers, tractors, backhoes, excavators, mini excavators, and front-end loaders.

The 4-in-1 bucket is mainly composed of the front bucket, rear bucket, hydraulic cylinder (opening cylinder), and hinge pin shaft.

Why Is It Called a 4-in-1 Bucket?
This bucket integrates four functions: loading, dozing, grading, and clamping. The reasons why is it called a 4 in 1 bucket are as follows:
1. Four functions in one: It is not a single-purpose attachment. One bucket can perform four different operations.
2. Quick switching functions: Relying on the opening/closing clamshell design and hydraulic cylinder control, the bucket can easily switch modes.
Therefore, it is called a 4-in-1 bucket.
4-in-1 Bucket: 4 Major Functions and How to Use
1. Loading Operation
Extend the cylinder rod to its longest position and close the front bucket to form a normal bucket for loading. There are two unloading methods:
Method 1: Lift to the highest position, tilt the whole bucket to dump material, like a standard bucket.
Method 2: Lift to the highest position, retract the cylinder to open the front bucket. Material falls between the front and rear buckets. Tilt the rear bucket slightly forward to empty it completely.
This second method gives a higher dumping height (about 1 meter higher). Although the dumping distance is slightly shorter, it is suitable for high dumping needs.
2. Dozing Operation
Retract the cylinder rod to separate the front and rear buckets. Open the front bucket and let the rear bucket touch the ground.
Adjust the angle of the rear bucket blade, then move the machine forward. Let the rear bucket perform the dozing work.
3. Grading Operation
Retract the cylinder rod to a certain position, open the front bucket to the required angle.
Adjust the height and angle of the rear bucket. In this way, the front bucket touches the ground while the rear bucket is off the ground. The front bucket is used for grading.
4. Clamping Operation
Move the cylinder rod to close the front bucket, clamp objects between the front and rear buckets.
The teeth on the side of the front bucket help grip round materials like logs. The bottom edges of both buckets can also be used to hold large stones or similar materials.
What Does a 4-in-1 Bucket Do?
Before the invention of the 4 in 1 bucket, different working environments required different configurations. When for dumping operations, a regular bucket was used; when for clamping wood, a wood-clamping fork was used. In short, the operation methods were relatively simple. They could not achieve one configuration for multiple purposes.
However, the 4 in 1 bucket can perform four operations: dumping, pushing soil, leveling, and clamping. It improves adaptability to various working environments and enables rapid conversion of multiple operation methods, enhancing efficiency.
The 4 in 1 bucket uses hydraulic cylinders to control the opening and closing of the welded movable bucket body and keep it in a certain position. It allows for operations such as dumping, pushing soil, leveling, clamping wood, rocks, and pipes. It covers various functions from simple dumping to precise site leveling operations, as well as material handling. It has the characteristics of high efficiency, simple structure, small size, and rapid conversion of different operation methods. It achieves one device for multiple purposes.
4-in-1 Bucket Uses
It is particularly suitable for situations where one equipment needs to perform multiple tasks.
▪️If you often need to switch between loading and leveling or picking up, a four-in-one bucket will be more practical than a standard bucket.
▪️If you are simply doing large-scale bulk excavation and loading loose materials, a standard bucket might be simpler and cheaper.

4-in-1 Bucket vs Standard Bucket
| Items | Standard Bucket | 4 in 1 Bucket |
|---|---|---|
| Structure | One-piece fixed bucket, only capable of overall tilting | Split opening-closing design with hydraulic cylinders, can open/close like a clamp |
| Core Functions | Only loading, dozing and dumping | Loading, dozing & grading, material clamping, high dumping |
| Flexibility | Single function | Multi-purpose |
| Durability | Not easy to be damaged | Requires more maintenance |
| Price | Lower | Higher |
| Application | Loading and unloading bulk materials like soil, sand, gravel, grain | Construction site chores, site cleanup, handling pipes, timber, waste, landscaping, ranch work |
| Operation Difficulty | Simple | More complex |
4-in-1 Bucket vs Grapple
Advantages and Disadvantages
| Items | 4-in-1 Bucket | Grapple |
|---|---|---|
| Advantages | 1. One bucket can handle various working conditions, saving time and costs. | 1. The grasping performance is far superior to that of the four-in-one bucket. The grid/dent-like structure does not get clogged, and the material sorting efficiency is high. |
| 2. It is compatible with special scenarios such as high-barrier trucks and silos. Offers much greater flexibility than ordinary buckets. | 2. The clamping force is strong. It can firmly grasp slippery logs, large chunks of concrete, scrap steel, and other difficult-to-grasp materials. | |
| 3. It covers the entire process of earthwork, leveling, and light-load grasping. Particularly suitable for small and medium-sized projects as well as agricultural applications. | 3. The structure is simple, with few moving parts, low maintenance costs, and makes long-term use more convenient. | |
| Disadvantages | 1. The gripping force is relatively weak, making it unsuitable for heavy, slippery or oversized irregular materials. | 1. It is completely unable to perform earthmoving and leveling operations. The site leveling requires the replacement of the bucket. |
| 2. The split structure results in a slightly lower effective loading capacity compared to the standard bucket of the same model. | 2. When transporting loose materials, there is a serious loss of material. It is not suitable for earthwork, sand and gravel transportation. | |
| 3. There are many hydraulic and articulated components, and more maintenance points, leading to a slightly higher failure rate during long-term use. | 3. The versatility is poor. It can only complete the related grasping tasks and the applicable working conditions are limited. |
How to Choose?
| Conditions | Choose |
|---|---|
| Need to handle multiple tasks at once: digging, grading, cleaning, clamping materials/waste | 👉 4-in-1 bucket |
| Don’t want to frequently change attachments; find it troublesome | 👉 4-in-1 bucket |
| Working conditions are complex and varied | 👉 4-in-1 bucket |
| Your budget is relatively high | 👉 4-in-1 bucket |
| Waste handling, demolition debris transport, forestry log loading, stone recycling | 👉 grapple |
| Need to sort materials (e.g., separate soil from stones or branches) without extra screening | 👉 grapple |
| Mainly gripping work, with little need for grading | 👉 grapple |
